Placenta Medicine

A modern approach to a timeless tradition

What is Placenta Medicine?

Placenta Medicine involves transforming your placenta into a medicinal supplement, tincture, or keepsake, honoring your postpartum journey. We use the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) method of placenta encapsulation to safely and expertly prepare in your home.

As a skilled, knowledgeable Placenta Encapsulator, I will process and encapsulate your placenta in your own home. Your kitchen will be left clean and sanitized. I will provide suggested consumption guidance.

Self-care is essential for postpartum healing and recovery.  Your placenta nourished your baby throughout pregnancy; now it can help nourish you.

FAQs

  • While there is limited academic research on the benefits, our clients have reported a variety of self-reported benefits, such as improved mood, increased energy, increased milk supply, and more.

Your placenta contains a number of nutrients that can help you recover after birth, as well as beneficial hormones that aid in postpartum recovery.

  • I use the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) method. This means I steam the placenta to kill any possible bacteria or viruses. Then it is dehydrated, crushed into a powder, and put into capsules. Each capsule is wiped clean for a tasteless experience.

  • I encapsulate your placenta in your home over two consecutive days. This eliminates the risk of cross-contamination and gives you access to the encapsulator who is available for questions throughout the process.

  • Two consecutive days; a few hours hours each day.

  • I perform each encapsulation in your home. All of my non-disposable supplies and equipment, along with the workspace is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized/sterilized before and after each encapsulation.

You can trust that your placenta is in good hands. You'll know there is zero risk of cross-contamination. I am certified in safe food handling protocols and in bloodborne pathogen prevention protocols. You can rest easy, knowing that your capsules contain only your pure placenta.

  • As with anything, you should do your own research to determine if placenta encapsulation is right for you.
Research suggests there is limited risk of ingestion by the postpartum person. Occasionally people have experienced jitteriness or dizziness after taking the pills and proper care needs to be taken prior to encapsulation to store the placenta properly to ensure safety. If you observe any negative effects, you should discontinue and consult your provider about whether continuing is the right choice for you.

  • Yes, all hospitals will release your placenta. Once you are admitted, tell your nurse you are keeping your placenta. They will have you sign a release form. They will put your placenta in a container (which they provide) and can then be brought home.

    * Also note, it helps if your OBGYN/Care Provider is in the loop on your wishes to keep your placenta. They can make sure to approve the release of your placenta.

Regardless of whether you are having a home birth or a hospital birth, you should let them know ahead of time of your intentions.

  • After birth, double bag your placenta in gallon size Ziploc bags and refrigerate within 1-2 hours of birth.

  • You need to store your capsules in a cool, dry, dark place like a cabinet or pantry or refrigerator. All pills are placed into dark colored jars to prevent as much light from coming through as possible.

  • Anywhere from 75 - 150, depending on the size of the placenta.

  • I will provide general guidelines for consumption, and encourage you to listen to your body’s cues. Every woman is different, but our suggested guidelines include:

2 capsules 3x a day for the first 3 days
1 capsule 3x a day for the next 7-10 days
    1 - 2 capsules a day until they're gone

  • Yes, in fact it will help you heal much faster!

  • Yes! Since your placenta is all natural, it will not interfere with any other medications you have to take.

  • Testing positive for GBS does not mean that you can’t encapsulate your placenta. It is still safe for you to encapsulate your placenta and here is why:
I only offer the Traditional Chinese Medicine method when preparing the placenta. This method involves steaming the placenta, followed by dehydrating the placenta. Any potential bacteria (including GBS) is killed during the steaming process as bacteria and viruses cannot survive at temperatures higher than 131 degrees F.

  • It is still safe to encapsulate your placenta if there is Meconium on the placenta. The bacteria in Meconium is from your own body. We thoroughly wash the placenta and then we steam the placenta to kill any bacteria or viruses present. Bacteria and viruses cannot survive at temperatures higher than 131 degrees F.

  • It is still safe to encapsulate your placenta.

  • You can still encapsulate your placenta if you delay cord clamping.

  • If the company you use only banks the cord and PART of the placenta, then yes, I can encapsulate the placenta. If they bank the cord and the entire placenta, no.

  • Placentas that have sat out longer than 4-5 hours at room temperature post birth with no preservation methods.

Placentas that have sat in the refrigerator for more than 4-5 days without being frozen.

Chemically contaminated placentas in pathology, either sanitizing or preserving.

Uterine infections or chorioamnionitis (an inflammation of the fetal membranes due to bacterial infection).

If you have HIV, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C.

    Heavy drug usage.

    Heavy smoking during pregnancy.

Cancer of the placenta, which is called choriocarcinoma.

  • I am fully trained and certified in TCM Placenta Encapsulation through ProDoua.

I have completed a course for Blood Borne Pathogens as well as completed Food Handling & Safety Certification.

  • It is processed by taking a very small portion of the placenta powder and placing it in a prepared solution of high grade alcohol over a number of weeks. A placenta tincture preserves the placenta’s medicinal qualities for lifelong use.
